Stephenson Quarter is a 10-acre site in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne which Clouston Group acquired in 2004. We named it after the historic Robert Stephenson & Co. Locomotive Works, established in 1823 as the first manufacturing facility of its kind in the world: a fundamental catalyst of the Industrial Revolution. The Grade II and Grade II* Listing Buildings – now collectively known as Stephenson Works - are located on the eastern part of the site.
In 2008 we achieved Detailed Planning and Listed Building consents to create a major mixed-used scheme across the whole site. In the aftermath of the 2008 global recession, Clouston Group sold the site to Newcastle City Council, though maintained an exclusive development agreement to reacquire and develop parts of the site. Between 2012 – 2018 we drew down various plots and created Phase 1. Clouston Group retains considerable land, property and business holdings at Stephenson Quarter.
As urbanists we are deeply committed to the continued delivery of substantial benefits to our city-region: Economic, Employment, Education, Technology, Heritage, Arts & Culture. To date our work at Stephenson Quarter has created 900 jobs and contributes circa £45m per annum to the regional economy.
Note of clarity - Clouston Group’s exclusive development agreement with Newcastle City Council for the balance of the site came to its scheduled end in 2018. At that time local press erroneously reported the agreement had been ended due to a ‘failure to pay agreed fees’. This was wholly incorrect - no such fees were outstanding, a fact confirmed by Newcastle City Council. The remainder of the site awaits development…
